Profile of Artist:

MAHIPATRAI KAVI born in a traditional family of story- tellers, he is unique among contemporary puppeteers of Gujarat. While he has promoted the traditional puppetry of the region especially the northern Gujarat he has also helped to create modern puppet theater in the State. He is an excellent director, educator, translator and a story teller.

He has written about a hundred and fifty puppet plays and has over a hundred puppet productions to his credit He has made more than a dozen puppet serials for television on various subjects. In the field of education, Shri Mahipatrai has used puppetry in the teaching of mathematics, geography, science and communication and also in teachers’ training. He has presented more than two thousand shows in India and about five hundred shows abroad – in France, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the Gulf States. Besides, he has two novels, six stage plays to his credit.

Mahipatrai Kavi is a participant of national and international seminars and festivals, he has also organized exhibitions and nine puppet films and various television puppet serials on social issue, health , and environmental themes

Shri Mahipatrai Kavi has been awarded by the prestigious award by Sangeet Natak Akademi – the Tagore Award for his contribution in the field of puppetry.
